Globally active corporations are encountering an ever-growing array of ethical dilemmas. These challenges prompt critical questions: How can principles such as freedom of speech, tolerance and respect be effectively upheld in an international context? What strategies are available to global organizations and what measures should they take to anticipate and manage potential conflicts? As part of our renowned “Praxisseminar” with Prof. Heinrich v. Pierer, former SIEMENS CEO and currently CEO at Pierer Consulting, our highly motivated students investigated five cases on this and presented their results to the expert panel.

After last week’s in-depth analysis of the moral dilemmas and strategic options of Metro in Russia, FC Bayern in Qatar, and Siemens in Russia, our enthusiastic students offered compelling observations on the strategy of Volkswagen and Apple in China in our session on January 16th. While each company faces its unique challenges, one key finding is certain: In an interconnected global landscape, companies cannot completely ignore moral issues and focus solely on profit. At the same time, we cannot expect others to evolve around our moral beliefs. Finding the right balance and drawing boundaries where necessary seems the way forward for most organizations.

Prof. Voigt and Michael Mertel extend their gratitude towards Prof. v. Pierer, Dr. Dörrie, and the participating student groups for their collaborative efforts and the fruitful discussion! We rounded off the seminar with a shared meal at a local restaurant, wishing our students continued success in their study. See you all soon!
