The Chair of Industrial Management is delighted to announce that our research article “What Takes the Wind out of Their Sails? A Micro-Foundational Perspective of Challenges for Building Dynamic Capabilities Towards Digital Business Model Innovation“ has been published in the Special Issue of the Schmalenbach Journal of Business Research, a prestigious B-ranked journal. The Schmalenbach Journal of Business Research is the official journal of the Schmalenbach-Gesellschaft für Betriebswirtschaft e.V. and the Verband der Hochschullehrerinnen und Hochschullehrer für Betriebswirtschaft e.V. (VHB) and offers high-quality research that is of wide interest to business research and practice.

In this article, the author team – Dr. Daliborka Witschel, Prof. Dr. Julian Müller and Prof. Dr. Kai-Ingo Voigt – systematically identifies and analyses factors that hinder the building of dynamic capabilities crucial for digital business model innovation. Seeking to develop a more profound understanding of how these challenges emerge, the study furthermore examines the underlying mechanisms behind them. Next to questions ‘how’ and ‘where’ challenges arise, the study also illuminates the nature of the underlying challenges. With this nuanced and in-depth view, the study provides valuable insights for practitioners, highlighting the critical aspects to prioritize when building dynamic capabilities. Furthermore, the article derives numerous actionable recommendations for the top management and digital business model developers.
