Based on an inspiring conversation with Professor Oliver Zipse, CEO of the BMW Group, Prof. Dr. Kai-Ingo Voigt together with Dr. Lothar Czaja examines the question of how sustainable, circular value chains can be developed for the future. Using the example of battery production, the authors show, based on an increasingly critical shortage of resources, the role that new technologies, innovations and processes play on the path to Net ZERO in an automotive environment that is shifting from combustion engines to electric drives. Our essay is part of the recently published book “Road to Net ZERO – Strategic Pathways for Sustainability-Driven Business Transformation”, an interdisciplinary joint project between Prof. Oliver Zipse and the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
