At this year’s European Academy of Management (EURAM) Conference, held in digital format, our team member Marc Rücker represented the Chair of Industrial Management with the study “Balancing Privacy and Communication in Activity-based Workspaces – A Longitudinal Study”. The study, which was conducted by Marc Rücker, Tobias Eismann, Martin Meinel and Prof. Kai-Ingo Voigt, investigated the effects of moving from a conventional office to an Activity-based Workspace (ABW). Our results revealed that ABWs or flexible offices are able to increase both privacy and communication at the same time. Both dimensions were considered incompatible in previous literature and are an important prerequisite for employee performance.

These new findings were enthusiastically received by the audience and led to a stimulating discussion about the continued importance of the office as a place to meet and innovate.

We are already looking forward to next year’s EURAM Conference and hope then to be able to present our research results to the people back in presence!
